Post-Rock: 7.9 - Tumán (2015)

79/ 100 Tumán is a well-crafted journey through layered crescendos, emotional tremolos, and subtle conceptual detail. Ah, damn. Turns out there’s still the 31st—I just realized it. Now I’m heading to Saint Petersburg, Russia , and have come across a post-rock band named 7.9 , with their only album titled Tumán , released ten years ago on May 12, 2015 . Tumán by 7.9 If you look it up, the first reference to Tumán is a region in Peru , and the track titles also refer to several cities there, including the capital, Lima . So let’s follow 7.9 as our tour guide this time. What could they be trying to show us about these Peruvian cities ? “Tumán” serves as the opening destination, beginning with drone sounds enveloping a guitar-and-drum intro before dipping and rising again in the usual crescendo pattern of this genre. Its second half reminds me of Matej Vanco – "3rd Session" and feels quite emotional for a hook. The next stop is “ Jaén ...

Ambient Electronic: Bålsam - Basement God﹋﹌◮ (2020)

79 / 100 Basement God﹋﹌◮ showcases Bålsam ’s skill in merging organic and electronic textures, creating vivid natural imagery through sound. This time, we’re still in the electronic realm through a release by Bålsam , which differs quite a bit from the two albums I reviewed earlier.  Basement God﹋﹌◮ by Bålsam It’s an EP titled Basement God﹋﹌◮ , released on April 16, 2020. With a name as peculiar as those found in vaporwave releases, it offers ambient electronic/downtempo music with Bålsam’s usual touch— field recordings such as flowing water in “ River Valley ” and bird chirps plus human voices and chants in “Kambô.” Meanwhile, the first track seems to use a more minimal form of noise.  The song “ Intro – Cave ” also employs aerophone-like sounds to emphasize natural traits associated with Asian regions , while drum hits seemingly sourced from membranophones reinforce a tropical forest atmosphere reminiscent of Asia-Africa . “Ri...

Electronica: Enloh - Find the Silence (2023)

78 / 100 Find the Silence marks Enloh ’s most vibrant and urban-oriented release, replacing introspection with motion and light. Finally, we’ve reached Enloh ’s last EP… Find the Silence , released in August 2023. This EP presents five tracks rich with synth sounds right from the first second. The opening track sounds smoother and more melodic compared to the synth-bass style of the next one, “ New Color ,” which brings the bustle of the night. The stage then opens up for the second half on "Find the Silence", featuring male vocals accompanied by dancing rhythms and claps, leaning heavily toward electronica and dance pop . “ Leisure ” continues with bouncing synth-bass vibrations, while “ 9 Lines ” feels like the chaos of city streets filled with passing vehicles, translated into tightly pulsing synths. So, for me, silence is almost nonexistent here. What exists instead is a world that slows down within the tempo of drum beats—espe...

Melodic House: Enloh - Float (2022)

78 / 100 Float continues Enloh ’s steady evolution, a subtle balance between groove and atmosphere. The end of October this time feels like a deadline—with some free time and a decent mood to increase my monthly review count. So, the mission to close this month’s reviews is Enloh ’s discography. Although it may seem dull, personally, I prefer this to jumping around between different genres, which only leads to confusion and exhaustion. Enloh released his third EP on March 18, 2022, titled Float , containing four melody-filled tracks. The opening track, “ Some Places ,” gives listeners a head-nodding experience from side to side through a kind of stereo effect on the drum beat. “ So Many Ways ” moves at a slower pace, though not the typical deep house type like “ Feel the Fire .” Then “ Trace ” greets with a bouncy bassline and floating melody. The closing track, “Float,” strengthens the ambient sy...

Melodic House: Enloh - Open (2020)

76 / 100 Open feels like a deeper exhale after Unity  w ith minimal set addition that trades brightness for calm introspection. Let’s open Enloh ’s second record that I mentioned in the previous review: Open .  Open  is also an EP containing three songs released in November of the same year. Open by Enloh Enloh not only plays in a calmer and deeper tone but also adopts additional male vocals that sound rather ethereal and whose source is unclear, especially on “ Feel the Fire .” This track suits moments of rest or relaxation. Meanwhile, “Run” features edited, robot-like vocals with a dominant, slow-paced tone accompanied by a humming sound that follows a fairly upbeat melody yet remains within the house music zone. The last track, “In,” highlights groovy synthesizers and somewhat slow but pressing rave bass, making the combination suitable for a nightclub setting. Okay, from here, I only picked up the deep house vibe from the fi...

Melodic House: Enloh - Unity (2020)

82 / 100 Unity by Enloh is a refreshing debut that blends melodic house and electronica with a smooth, dreamlike polish. It was supposed to be Bålsam or Radiohead that I continued pursuing, but when my second phone came back to life, I suddenly remembered another target. An artist named Enloh , whom I stumbled upon randomly on Bandcamp . Enloh is the project of Cameron Earle , centered around electronic music such as deep/melodic house and electronica. Cameron began his musical journey due to an early fascination with sound back in 2012, and when he was around nineteen, after moving to Los Angeles , he started experimenting with FL Studio and Ableton . Unity became his first EP and debut release, issued on March 6, 2020, showcasing an impressively polished production. At first, I thought Open was Enloh’s debut because of its rawer sound, but in fact, Unity preceded it and it already displays Cameron’s skillful handling of materials to ...

Ambient: Bålsam - Soul Offerings (2019)

82 / 100 If Flora y Fauna is the sound of vegetation and parenthood celebration, Soul Offerings is its spiritual predecessor; the breath of the forest. Let’s step back half a year before the COVID pandemic began — exactly one year before Bålsam celebrated his daughter’s birth with the release of Flora y Fauna . On October 10, 2019, this ambient project released Soul Offerings as a manifestation of the mother earth’s natural whispers. Soul Offerings by Bålsam The sonic components here can be seen as the foundation for the next album, differing mainly in their tonal depth. The ambient textures in Soul Offerings are deeper, more minimal, and without a clear sense of front or back. Similar, yet distinct. As the journey begins with birdsong and the flow of a river, “ Amazon Winter ” freezes the forest air and signals a darker phase through its drift toward dark ambient. Night falls. Time moves on as “ Wind Water ” portrays the quiet side of si...

Ambient: Bålsam - Flora y Fauna (2020)

80 / 100 A tender, heartfelt ambient album grounded in warmth and domestic tranquility. Every album carries a personal meaning for its artist, and Flora y Fauna is no exception. Bålsam released this collection as a celebration of the birth of his child, Enna Asher Sajuan, at the end of 2020. Bålsam is the project of Anthony Asher-Yates , originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota , who later moved to Colombia. Flora y Fauna by Bålsam The first thing that stands out is the album cover — previously used by Neotantra for Circles of Pines – Dark Water Ponds , with only the label logo’s position changed. The second is that Bålsam offers 13 tracks built mainly from ambient, piano, and field recordings of rain, birds, and human chatter — seemingly captured live to create a sense of relaxation, setting it apart from Dark Water Ponds . The only drone-based piece is the opener “Above the World,” which feels like the most contrasting track. The soothing...

J-Pop: Yuna - 15 Wings (2025)

71 / 100 A technically strong but emotionally tentative debut. The loss of Trebel as a Spotify alternative left me scrambling to find a similar path. Two new names emerged— Sound Tune and SonicNest —practically twins in appearance and interface, both offering downloadable playback for offline listening. However, that feature turned out to be temporary, as both reverted to their true form: pure streaming platforms. This setback made me reluctant to continue with Radiohead , and reviewing this next album feels heavier than usual, but I’ll give it a try. The name Yuna itself is quite common—used by a Malaysian singer, a member of ITZY , and even two or more local artists—so this new J-pop singer easily gets buried in search results, despite her single “ AGEPi ” reportedly topping the iTunes House Chart . Yet, I didn’t feel a strong hook from its opening and was instead reminded of Hoshino Kirara’s " Lost Emotion " hich follows a simi...

Soundtrack: tttc - Foretold (2024)

79 / 100 The most refined and cohesive work to date—melding dreamlike naturalism and subtle darkness into a compelling ambient narrative. The northern hemisphere’s summer isn’t over yet—and neither is the project from Ho Chi Minh City , tttc . The second album, Foretold , was quietly released in early July 2024 through the main home, Fruit Exports . Foretold by tttc This time, tttc focuses on ambient and field recordings, though the opener “Summer of Happiness” still carries the dark mood left behind by the final track of Sum/mer/cury . The chirping of birds accompanies the easily recognizable pure rain sounds in “Monologue.” The whistling in the final track is meant to dispel the lingering fear from the darker tracks above it, following a better acoustic arrangement than the closing song from the Pool Party EP. Another dark soundtrack, “ Vicario Brothers ,” uses string instruments in a startling, horror-like manner, while “ Enormous Wings ” stands ...

Soundtrack: tttc - Sum / mer / cury (2024)

71 / 100 A shimmering and experimental sequel to Pool Party , expanding tttc ’s sound toward cosmic territories while keeping the same playful unpredictability. The sting of summer in 2024 made tttc look up at the sky, and what came to mind was the planet closest to the sun— Mercury —even though Venus is scientifically the hottest. Well, it’s up to tttc to decide which one to spotlight. Sum / mer / cury by tttc Just like the Pool Party EP, Sum/mer/cury was first released by Fruit Exports in June, followed a month later by Ingrown Records . This time, the genre orientation is almost the same as before, only replacing the material with a more spacey atmosphere. tttc opens with a mix of ambient and what sounds like field recordings edited to resemble outer-space signal waves—at least to my ears. I’m not sure what sound sources were actually used here. “ SpaceOS ” presents analog-style music that is followed by the game-like soundtracks “From Eart...

Soundtrack: tttc - Pool Party (2024)

72 / 100 A playful and stylistically varied summer EP that blends ambient , IDM , glitch , and experimental textures. I’m deeply obsessed with offline music, so I had to postpone my journey with Radiohead and a new J-Pop artist named Yuna after some issues occurred on the streaming platforms. I then returned to my main base, Bandcamp , to meet tttc . pool party (remastered) by tttc Summer is the perfect time to go to the pool. It’s no surprise that a tropical artist like tttc (trang trại trái cây), hailing from Ho Chi Minh City , Vietnam , did the same with an EP titled Pool Party . The release date through Ingrown Records perfectly matches the EP’s theme—May 2024—with a remastered version following in July 2025, after Fruit Exports initially released it in November 2023 with a remaster in September 2024. The album cover shows a woman in a swimming pool, which made me expect something vaporwave -like, but actually, no—the opening track, “P...

Alternative Rock: Radiohead - The Bends (1995)

76 / 100 A significant leap forward from their debut, The Bends cements Radiohead ’s identity in alternative rock through refined works. The music world was still young back then, so Radiohead returned to work on their second album, The Bends . The Bends was released on March 13, 1995 by Parlophone . It was produced by John Leckie , with additional production by Radiohead , Nigel Godrich , and Jim Warren . The album reached number four on the UK Albums Chart , but failed to build on the success of “Creep” outside the UK, peaking at number 88 on the US Billboard 200 . It received more critical acclaim than Pablo Honey , including a nomination for Best British Album at the 1996 Brit Awards , and elevated Radiohead from one-hit wonders to one of Britain’s most recognized bands. It is often cited as one of the greatest albums of all time, appearing on Colin Larkin ’s All Time Top 1000 Albums and all three editions of Rolling Stone ’s 500 Greatest A...

Alternative Rock: Radiohead - Pablo Honey (1993)

70 / 100 A raw and transitional debut with strong grunge and alternative rock roots. Radiohead , Radiohead, Radiohead... For fans of Western rock music , it’s almost impossible not to know Radiohead , especially for those in their 20s and 30s. Radiohead is an iconic band that has become a staple in gloomy and depressive playlists of this era. For this reason, I won’t be diving too deeply into their history, even if that means my review will lose some weight. I won’t pay much attention to bands that have already become global market giants. If you want a more in-depth, professional review of this band, you can easily find it in major magazines or from seasoned critics. My reviews are always casual and will never reach a “pro” level. Okay. This time, I’ll start from the first album, Pablo Honey . It was released in February 1993, produced by Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie , and recorded at Chipping Norton Studio and Courtyard Studio, Oxfordshire ,...

Deep House: Charles A.D. - Inception (2019)

78 / 100 A strong debut that blends deep house rhythms with textured ambient passages . After my first attempt at reviewing 6:04 ’s discography, I’m still a bit unsure where to go next, even though there are many other releases waiting to be covered. My limited knowledge of certain genres is one of the main obstacles to creating varied reviews, so it’s better to focus on areas I can still handle rather than not at all. So, I’ll return to Charles A.D. with another album: Inception . Inception is both the first album released by Umé Records and the debut full-length from deep house producer Hiroyuki Tanaka , a.k.a. Charles A.D. , from Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture . It was released on January 31, 2019, and contains eight tracks with a total duration of 46 minutes. Atmospheric pulses open the journey with a blurred yet dense bass sound that produces strong reverb. There are two main currents of relaxing deep house throughout this album, mainly differen...

Dark Ambient: 6:04 - ⊔Ո∴ •Ω— ∴L⏁ ᘰL ⊂:ᒕᒕ—Ω—⊥⨀? (2024)

71 / 100 A brief but intriguing finale that blends minimal noise bursts and dark ambient textures with a cryptic aesthetic.  After quite a long journey, we’ve finally arrived at 6:04 ’s last EP, which comes with an even stranger title and I honestly have no idea how to pronounce it. Is it Morse code? Apparently not. Unfortunately, the album description on Blade Records ’ Bandcamp page uses the same style, leaving a mystery I can’t decipher. ⊔Ո∴ •Ω— ∴L⏁ ᘰL ⊂:ᒕᒕ—Ω—⊥⨀? by 6:04 The title is ⊔Ո∴ •Ω— ∴L⏁ ᘰL ⊂:ᒕᒕ—Ω—⊥⨀? —confusing, right?—and it was released on July 16, 2024. It contains seven tracks with a total length of just eight minutes. The track titles are just as strange, so I’ll simply refer to them by order. The first track is extremely minimal, consisting only of faint noise flashes. The following sound concepts remain consistent with Are You Aware? and Made Collector , using dark ambient -like waves mixed with audio samples or field r...
