Genre: Alternative/Punk rock, Pop Punk
I haven't had the chance to follow the BanG Dream! franchise, despite having plans to do so after watching K-ON! a few years back. The situation was worsened by the death of my interest in forms of entertainment outside of music, leading me to eventually forget about it altogether because the underlying genres surely wouldn't have met my expectations at the time—which was metal. However, out of curiosity, I looked up some information and sampled Roselia, who came closest with their symphonic rock style—a genre that feels somewhat distinct amidst the sea of J-Pop and mainstream rock. A few years later, BanG Dream! spawned another exclusive band, Ave Mujica, which hits closer and heavier with a metal edge, but once again, I didn't just blindly accept them. I kept wishing they would just go all out and play power metal instead.
Now, amidst the erosion of my interest in power metal itself, I found myself daydreaming about something even more impossible: an anime band tackling indie, math rock, post-rock, or even shoegaze. This is something I could actually catch glimpses of—such as through the intros—in Bocchi the Rock! (Kessoku Band) and, subsequently, MyGO!!!!!.
MyGO!!!!! emerged before Ave Mujica, but they ultimately still end up being a disappointment on this Meisekiha album, despite the recurring thought that music from Japan does tend to sound more emotional in its melodies. This tendency can also be seen in the sheer volume of melodic power metal bands over there. Prime examples are "SenzaiHyoumei" and "Namonaki," which remind me of Supercell's "Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari." That "power" aura is also heavily influenced by a quite potent pop-punk and punk rock backbone, as heard on "Hitoshizuku," "Utaimashou, Narashimashou," "Otoichie," "Utakotoba," and "Melody." So, this all-female band isn't just playing the straightforward alternative rock I initially expected.
As for the lyrics, as I've always said, I don't care. Perhaps they sound energetic over sorrowful words, as people often say about typical Japanese tracks, but the spoken-word segments and crowd sing-alongs—paired with melodies and drum beats that occasionally get quite sharp—are already enough to weigh heavy on my head. Because of this, I'm not entirely sure which ones I even want to highlight.
I just want power metal!!!!
