I am again experimenting with a different format for the sake of time efficiency in clearing my personal playlist queue, even though it feels somewhat unsatisfying to leave behind such brief and concise remarks. First off, I’ll be tackling some other metal releases.
Is anyone seeing this? What are your thoughts?
The Prophet – Chronos (2019)
Genre: Melodic Death Metal
Score: 75/100
There is no need to compromise much on melody here, even if all that’s on my mind is melodic death/doom metal. The piano closing the title track, in particular, was the highlight for me.
Tracklist:
- One for All
- The Vision
- Chronos
Sallow Moth (USA) – The Larval Hope (2020)
Genre: Progressive Death Metal
Score: 65/100
Chaotic and influenced by hardcore/deathcore.
Tracklist:
- Noxious Revival
- Death Mutation vs Metallurgic Summonings
- The Larval Hope (Piercer of Spells)
- Temporal Trespass
- Ancient Grudge
- Glimpse the Unthinkable
Sallow Moth – Stasis Cocoon (2021)
Genre: Progressive Death Metal
Score: 75/100
It sounded a bit too dense at first, but then it shifted into something more solid with clean, melodic riffs following the title track.
Tracklist:
- Chalice of the Void
- Stasis Cocoon
- Seal of Primordium
- Fevered Visions
- Phantasmal Sphere of the Shadowmage Infiltrator
- Birthing Pod, Chaos Orb, Mindslaver
- Drowner of Secrets, Bring to Light
Sallow Moth – Failure to Find (2022)
Genre: Progressive Death Metal
Score: 60/100
True to the title, I failed to find much feeling in this 16-minute single EP.
Tracklist:
- Failure to Find
Sallow Moth – Vial (2024)
Genre: Progressive Death Metal
Score: 75/100
Their most expressive release so far, to my knowledge. The bass gets a chance to stand out, and the guttural vocals lean into brutal death metal territory. It even features a long ambient stretch on the closing track.
Tracklist:
- Relic of Deceptiva
- Gutscape Navigator
- Noctai Carapace
- Return from Planar Chaos
- Displacer
Twist of Fate – Twist of Fate (1998)
Genre: Melodic Progressive Metal
Score: 65/100
The 90s vibes are palpable here. I can hear traces of Fates Warning, even though I've only just recently tried their latest album.
Tracklist:
- Second Look
- Only When It Rains
- Season of Change
- Forever Mine
- Peaceful Pain
- Instrumental
- Shallow
Undulation – An Unhealthy Interest in Suffering (2023)
Genre: Black Metal
Score: 60/100
Drowned-out raw waves that don't rely too heavily on blast beats, opting instead for a slow-creeping dark atmosphere.
Tracklist:
- Amethyst Necropolis (Une Chargone)
- Judith Beheading Holofernes
- Undulator
- Failures of the Demiurge
- Acid, Vinegar
- Dressed for Her Execution
Wishing Well – Benedictus (2002)
Genre: Symphonic Gothic Metal
Score: 65/100
A hum about a night that was blessed and then violated? I’m not quite sure.
Tracklist:
- Benedictus
- Violanta
Xavarthan – Night of the Nocturnal Rites (2022)
Genre: Black Metal
Score: 75/100
A fine execution of black metal. It sounds atmospheric despite not being "Atmospheric Black Metal," and it isn't "raw" despite being categorized as Raw Black Metal.
Tracklist:
- Revontulien valaisemana yönä
- Towards Death We Shall Ride
- ...and So the River Has Flown and the Times Passed
Xerces – Rewritten in Blood (A Quarter of Century in Agony) 25th Anniversary (2022)
A compilation of sorts that illustrates the various characters of Xerces throughout their journey. Wrath, misery, and darkness, each with its own dynamic.
Tracklist:
- Abigere Dictator
- In the Funeral Depths of the Souls Pit
- I Hate Myself
- Fundere.....Fundere Lacrimas
- I Fuck My Life
- Hell - Immer
- Zetsubo
- Hell - Immer Part 6 : Et Caereta
- Avec le temps (Leo Ferré cover)
