Rapid Log: 001

 I am again experimenting with a different format for the sake of time efficiency in clearing my personal playlist queue, even though it feels somewhat unsatisfying to leave behind such brief and concise remarks. First off, I’ll be tackling some other metal releases.

Is anyone seeing this? What are your thoughts?

The Prophet – Chronos (2019)

Genre: Melodic Death Metal

Score: 75/100

There is no need to compromise much on melody here, even if all that’s on my mind is melodic death/doom metal. The piano closing the title track, in particular, was the highlight for me.

Sallow Moth (USA) – The Larval Hope (2020)

Genre: Progressive Death Metal

Score: 65/100

Chaotic and influenced by hardcore/deathcore.

Sallow Moth – Stasis Cocoon (2021)

Genre: Progressive Death Metal

Score: 75/100

It sounded a bit too dense at first, but then it shifted into something more solid with clean, melodic riffs following the title track.

Score: 60/100

True to the title, I failed to find much feeling in this 16-minute single EP.

Sallow Moth – Vial (2024)

Genre: Progressive Death Metal

Score: 75/100

Their most expressive release so far, to my knowledge. The bass gets a chance to stand out, and the guttural vocals lean into brutal death metal territory. It even features a long ambient stretch on the closing track.

Twist of Fate – Twist of Fate (1998)

Genre: Melodic Progressive Metal

Score: 65/100

The 90s vibes are palpable here. I can hear traces of Fates Warning, even though I've only just recently tried their latest album.

Undulation – An Unhealthy Interest in Suffering (2023)

Genre: Black Metal

Score: 60/100

Drowned-out raw waves that don't rely too heavily on blast beats, opting instead for a slow-creeping dark atmosphere.

Xavarthan – Night of the Nocturnal Rites (2022)

Genre: Black Metal

Score: 75/100

A fine execution of black metal. It sounds atmospheric despite not being "Atmospheric Black Metal," and it isn't "raw" despite being categorized as Raw Black Metal.

Xerces – Rewritten in Blood (A Quarter of Century in Agony) 25th Anniversary (2022)

A compilation of sorts that illustrates the various characters of Xerces throughout their journey. Wrath, misery, and darkness, each with its own dynamic.

Electronica/IDM: 4T Thieves - Humanoid (2018)

70 / 100 Humanoid is a compact and tastefully crafted slice of IDM-leaning electronica that blends futuristic elements without overwhelming the listener. I opened my December with an electronica release by 4T Thieves , an EP titled Humanoid , which came out back in February 2018. A brief profile and the project’s track record can be found on RYM or Last.fm , and it’s clear that this act has been active since the 90s, although only arriving on Bandcamp around 2018. Soundtrack: Dragica Kahlina - Ava Chapter 1 OST (2022)

78 / 100 A compelling dark ambient soundtrack , best enjoyed by fans of atmospheric and cosmic soundscapes rather than traditional game OST seekers. Ava is a mobile puzzle game inspired by tarot cards , developed by Stardust LLC . It was released in four chapters, rolled out periodically between February 2020 and the first quarter of 2021. While there’s a claim that the game won an award, it was never explained exactly where or what it won. For the soundtrack of Chapter 1, Stardust LLC collaborated with local, Zurich-based artist Dragica Kahlina .
